The Benefits of An Inquiry-based Education 2/2
Strong Start Early Care and Education Center uses curriculum that essentially transforms our daycare into an child development center. The curriculum conforms to Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards as well as standards of the National Association for the Education of the Education of Young Children.
This is part two of a two-part blog about the benefits of inquiry-based learning. Click here to read part one.
Our world is a rapidly changing one where, within one generation, an entire technology revolution has taken place. It is critical for the future that children learn how to think and are not just force-fed rote facts.
Curiosity is Fed
- Every child has an innate curiosity and inquiry-based education embraces this natural impulse to learn and think.
- When you respond to this hunger, a child will grow to love learning and become a lifelong learner.
Steps in Inquiry-Based Learning
- Inventory prior knowledge
- Ask a question
- Develop a hypothesis
- Design an investigation
- Interpreting the results
- Communication the results
- Collaborating with others
- Asking more questions and reflecting
The Teacher’s Role
- You may ask how a child knows to do these steps and the answer is the teacher.
- The teacher in an inquiry-based classroom guides the students through each step, and through the years, the child learns how to do each step on his or her own and with deeper and deeper knowledge developing.
- Children advance through highly structured lessons, to guided lessons where the teacher observes and corrects when necessary, helping to keep the student on track, to independent, or open, inquiry.
