How To Prepare Your Toddler For Daycare

January 9, 2023

Sending a toddler to daycare can be an intimidating experience for both parents and the child. But with some preparation and planning, you can make the transition easier. Here are four tips on how to prepare your tot for toddler daycare from our team at Strong Start Early Learning Center in Trumbull and Shelton, CT.

Talk About It

Even if they don’t exactly understand what’s happening when they go to daycare, talking about it before the first day can help your toddler better adjust to their new situation. Explain why you are sending them to daycare — maybe it’s so Mommy or Daddy can go back to work or so they can learn new things and meet new friends — and answer any questions they have honestly.

Visit the Daycare

Another way to make sure your toddler is prepared for their first day is by visiting the toddler daycare facility beforehand. This gives them a chance to familiarize themselves with their surroundings and interact with staff members and other children who go there. Plus, seeing all the fun activities they’ll be able to participate in should help alleviate any fears they may have had about going away from home!

Start a Routine

Establishing a routine leading up to your child’s first day of daycare helps create an environment of consistency which can make it easier for them when they arrive on their first morning. Setting up fixed meal times, nap times, play times, and bedtimes allow them to adjust more easily once they start attending school full-time or part-time.

Bring a Familiar Item From Home

If possible, bring something from home that comforts your toddler, such as a favorite blanket or soft toy. This will provide a sense of security for them when everything around them looks unfamiliar and strange compared to what they are used to at home.
