Creative Ways to Teach Your Child to Identify Numbers

June 27, 2018

Before your child can start learning about math, they need to learn how to recognize numbers!

Many children can recite numbers from a very young age, but in order for them to move on and start learning how to use those numbers, they need to learn how to recognize them. It is very important to teach your child how to identify numbers, and luckily, there are many things you can do to help your child! Our early childhood education center in Trumbull has come up with this list of creative tips to help you teach your child to identify numbers:

#1. Make it a game!

Play is a very powerful tool for teaching children, and games are a great option for teaching your child to identify numbers. You can either purchase an existing game for number recognition, like Zingo 1-2-3, or you could make up your own game!

#2. Utilize the world around you.

We can learn a lot from the world around us, and there are numbers almost everywhere! When you are shopping for groceries, point to the numbers on the price tags and ask your child to tell you what the numbers are. You can teach your child to identify numbers using the numbers on license plates, home addresses, mile markers on the highway, street signs –anything that has a number on it will do!

#3. Incorporate numbers into art.

Take a few moments to sit down and draw or color with your child. Rather than drawing people or places, ask your child to draw numbers. The more your child practices drawing out the numbers, the better they will be able to recognize them!
